Jiyoon Hyun
South Korean pianist Jiyoon Hyun (born in Seoul in 1990) began her musical journey at the age of five on a toy piano given to her by her grandfather. Her passion for the piano has remained a central part of her life ever since. She earned her first degree from Seoul Arts High School, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University. In 2019, she began her master’s studies at the University of the Arts Bremen in the class of Martin von der Heydt. During her studies, she was awarded a scholarship from the German Orchestra Foundation as well as a scholarship from the German Music Council, which included a concert at the Clavier-Salon Göttingen. In addition, Jiyoon Hyun received positive reviews during a master class led by Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, a jury member of the International Chopin Competition. Thanks to her fellow composition student Kyungjin Lim, she discovered a passion for contemporary music and remains fascinated by it to this day. This has led to various collaborations with living composers. Since 2018, she has been actively involved in contemporary music and is currently the artistic director of the ensemble SONOR XXI. In 2023, she was active in South Korea both as a pianist and as the initiator of numerous performances. Notable among these are the “Voice of Women” project, which advocates for the dissemination of works by unknown female composers, and the reading concert “Between Book and Music,” which brought books and music together. She was selected as a fellow of the KfW Foundation as part of the “Frankfurt Moves!” program and served as a pianist at the IEMA (International Ensemble Modern Academy) during the 24/25 season. From October 2024 to September 2025, she performed at festivals such as the Impuls Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Gaudeamus Festival, and presented her solo exhibition <Nois;ound>, a combination of sound and installation art, at the KfW Villa 102. She then returned to Korea and has since been engaged in various concert and curatorial activities, including being selected as a “Tongyeong Fringe Artist” in 2026, for the Seoul Cultural Foundation’s “Art Support Creation A-Track” in 2026 and for the 2026 K-Art Artist Support Program. In addition, he is the leader of the duo Traverso, which focuses intensively on art songs, and is currently very active as the pianist of the Chroma Kollektiv, commuting between Korea and Germany.
